About Randy Thanthong-Knight

I’m a reporter at Bloomberg News, currently based in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, where I cover the economy, government policies and regulations, and immigration. Prior to my current role in Canada, I wrote about Thailand’s economy, government and commodities for Bloomberg in Bangkok. In both countries, I have interviewed ministers, policymakers and business leaders, and have written extensively about both North America’s and Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy.

Over the past eight years, I have worked at several international news wire services and a broadcast outlet. As a multimedia journalist, I’m comfortable going from breaking news and writing stories to being on TV and radio, or from taking photos and videos to making visual graphics. Before joining Bloomberg in 2018, I was a reporter at NHK Japan Broadcasting  Corporation, and at dpa German Press Agency. I also interned at Reuters News Agency.

Some of the recent major news events I have reported on included the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic recovery, the outbreak of African swine fever in Asia, and Thailand’s 2019 general election. My published articles have appeared in major publications, such as Bloomberg.com, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Washington Post, Kaiser Health News, and The Daily Beast.

I earned my master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and attended the program as a Fulbright scholar and a Stabile fellow in investigative journalism. My coursework included business reporting, data and investigative journalism, and narrative writing. Upon graduation, I won the Melvin Mencher Award for superior reporting for my investigative master’s project on U.S. state prisons failing to offer the cure to inmates with hepatitis C.

For my undergraduate degree, I studied communication management at Chulalongkorn University, where I graduated with first class honors, and completed my semester abroad at Sciences Po Paris. During my time at both universities, I was involved with the school publications — Chase and The Paris Globalist — as an editor-in-chief and a writer, respectively.
